The theater was named for Mary Rippon (1850-1935), the first female instructor at the University of Colorado at Boulder and one of the first female University instructors in the United States. A year after her death, the Regents approved plans for an outdoor theatre in Rippon's honor. This theatre was completed in 1939. It was designed by George Reynolds, a professor of English and one of the founders of the theatre department.
In 1944, James Sandoe directed a production of Romeo and Juliet in the outdoor theatre. Its success led to the establishment of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival in 1958.
With full technical capabilities and seating for up to 1200, the Mary Rippon Theater is the perfect location for large and small scale events. Let us create a custom package for you. Contact us for more details.
