Camp Shakespeare

Don't you need some Shakespeare in your summer?

Camp Shakespeare is a 14-year-old education program run by the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. For three weeks in the summer, kids ages 10-18 come to CU Boulder’s campus and study Shakespeare with CSF professionals. Working in small groups of 16, these students spend a total of 60 hours learning about Shakespeare by rehearsing, staging and performing a shortened play or selected scenes. This is a fabulous way for kids and teens to explore theater and Shakespeare in a creative and supportive environment. In addition to acting training, students are coached by a Voice, Speech & Text expert on enunciation, diction and clarity, which will aid them on and off stage. Campers also work with a stage combat professional to learn the safe way to fight onstage. Tuition includes one ticket to attend a field trip to see the CSF production of Twelfth Night on Sunday, July 15.

Apprentice Class: Kids of Will
Ages 10-12
Students in the Apprentice Class will prepare selected scenes from Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, comedies and histories. This introductory program allows campers to learn about a variety of Shakespeare’s characters and gain a wide knowledge of the canon.

Journeyman Class: Twelfth Night
Ages 13-14
Our Journeyman Class will prepare Shakespeare’s rollicking comedy, Twelfth Night. Don’t miss the chance to experience this tale of shipwrecks, trickery and mistaken identity. This summer, you might play a shipwrecked twin, a lovesick duke, a haughty steward, a countess in mourning, a rowdy uncle, a bumbling wooer, or the knowing fool. Be there for the climactic ending!

Master Class: Richard III
Ages 15-18
The Master Class will tackle Shakespeare’s tragic history, Richard III, a story of betrayal, murder, secrets and a deformed king. Richard, hungry for power, will stop at nothing to gain the throne. Along the way he kills his brothers, seduces a grieving widow, and murders young princes. With Richard around, everyone must watch their back. But who will win the final battle?
